I was paralyzed last night, please read these symptoms...is this normal?

I suffer from mild high pressure and always try to keep it checked. Last night I had chocolate crepes and a mocha latte. I smoked one cigarette and went to bed an hour later. About ten minutes after going to bed, I started feeling a tingling sensation in both of my arms; my ears were acting funny as well, like they were stuffed of something, the worse part is that I was like paralyzed! I wanted to pick up the phone on my night table but couldn’t move…I kept thinking: Am I going to die? As soon as I can move I’ll call for help!!!" As crazy as it sounds, I felled asleep.
What was that? I would like to get feedback from doctors or specialists, and if this has happened to you, could you please tell me? I will go see a doctor but I want to be as informed as possible beforehand…I’d hate it if they tell me it was just a nightmare.
I don't use drugs...only coffee and chocolate.

Sleep paralysis consists of a period of inability to perform voluntary movements either at sleep onset (called hypnogogic or predormital form) or upon awakening (called hypnopompic or postdormtal form).

Sleep paralysis may also be referred to as isolated sleep paralysis, familial sleep paralysis, hynogogic or hypnopompic paralysis, predormital or postdormital paralysis

Some ways to reduce it:

* getting enough sleep
* reduce stress
* exercise regularly (but not too close to bedtime)
* keep a regular sleep schedule

On the other hand, just because this happened to you doesn't mean you have the condition. I am in a psychology class right now and was reading a part about how the brain works during sleep. The part that controls movement in your brain is used for other things during sleep, and it is common for some people to have sleep paralysis at some point in their lives. My brother has had the same thing happen to him once, and never happened to him since. Save yourself some money and don't go to the doctor unless it becomes regular.
