I Love German Wine and Food - A Trockenbeerenauslese Dessert Wine

You may know that the different classifications of German wines are largely dependent the sugar content. German Wine Styles include Spaetlese which literally means a wine made from late harvest grapes, but actually means one made from ripe grapes, Auslese, which are late harvest, sweet Beerenauslese, botryised (attacked by a "good" fungus) of wine from selected grapes individually, Eiswein made from grapes that have frozen on the vine and, finally, Trockenbeerenauslese, individually selected grapes shriveled that have a very high sugar content. I heard decades ago such wines, but for one reason or another, has begun to taste recently.

I remember a Parisian friend who laughed and laughed at the idea that Germans are a rotten grape wine individually to off the vine, never knowing that the French do the same. I've never tasted one of the top Sauternes line, but has a taste for second quality that was boring. As I write these lines I see for sale a Sauternes 1935 to over $ 400. How fortunate that the bottle most is close to two hours drive away.

Trockenbeerenauslese wine is produced in most German wine regions, but usually represents only about one percent of the total wine production. Thus, these wines are not often available, especially in a range of fairly moderate prices. They are often sold in half-bottles. Given the softness and thickness, these are wines to sip. Advice for young people: if you get drunk, stay away from machines, cars, boats and power tools. And do not get drunk or even drink a lot of these sweet wines. You will not appreciate at the time, and you really feel sick afterwards.

Unlike other items in this series, we do not offer sample menu. And we had not the courage to try this wine with cheese, they are of high quality or not. In fact, sweet wines are often paired with cheese - But not here.

Wine Revised Anselmann Ortega Trockenbeerenauslese 1999 11% alcohol about $ 28 (half bottle)

Let's start by quoting the marketing materials. This multi-award Winning wine is made from grapes Ortega rarely seen, a cross between Mueller-Thurgau and Siegerrebe. Ortega nature, a fruity taste and bright make it a natural partner for creating dessert wines. Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA) is the German name for totally botrytis-affected wine, a style similar Sauternes in Bordeaux. The sweet, ripe, sweet and very accessible bodied wine is a great dessert on its own or serve with mature cheeses. And now, for my review.

Only the wine was very disappointing, perhaps because decades have passed between my first hearing of this wine, and finally, it tasting. The first pairing alongside an apple cake with chocolate mint was excellent.

I then tried with thin biscuits containing almonds and pistachios. The wine had a nice texture and thickness. The TBA is quite long and very powerful. A draft tiny mouth filled. He was pleasantly sour. This is the kind of wine you do not want every day. I did not throw the match; This wine does not spoil, at least not for long, long time.

The following link was with the high quality chocolate covered orange peels. The wine had just the right acidity and sweetness, but not very complex flavors. It was not excellent, but very enjoyable. Then I went home to biscotti fine with apricot preserves. This dessert fruit intensified TBA. Another match was with a ripe honeydew. The wine was sweet and syrupy, the luscious word comes to mind and there were many, many flavors.

Then followed (maybe weeks later) an orange cake homemade chocolates and fresh strawberries. The intensification of flavor combo of orange wine. Another time I went with a chocolate bar truly beautiful ice covered with vanilla cream. At first the wine seems to disappear but it was long enough. Soft and sweet all gone, and I felt decadent. When ice cream was gone, drop or two of wine that remained in the glass was mouth filling. We are nearing the end of the bottle.

With a raspberry almond tart Crostata the TBA has remained strong and musky, the dominant taste was apricot. The last match with a very lemony with a pie crust French was loaded with butter. Great combo. Citrus and more.

Final verdict. I like this wine, but there are many dessert wines to try and try again.
