Chewing Gum History

Archaeological research shows that gum was common in ancient times. The ancient Greeks believed that chewing a tree substance called mastic. The Maya Indians chewed a substance called chicle sapodilla tree. Other natural gums came from trees, herbs and plants.

Gum modern history begins in the 19th century United States. In 1848, John B. Curtis became the first spruce gum gum. Sold gum first name of the State of Maine Pure Spruce Gum.
