So next time you feel yourself becoming the Incredible Hulk will munch on food and fun back to the table with a cool head and a steady pulse, ready to help you to large portion of Nice, cold revenge.
Food has been known to have an effect on your state of mind since ancient times ... Just think all the people consumed various aphrodisiacs over the centuries for "In the Mood"! Wizz and winks later, it is a fact that certain foods can trigger certain moods and make you feel more alert, happier, calmer ... or friskier!
In the Middle Ages the experts used elderberries, quince and dates to alleviate depression, and lettuce, chicory, purslane has been offered to reduce anxiety. Today, research has been able to uncover some of the links between food and mood, and we are ready to share with you.
First the science bit: Neurotransmitters are chemicals that work to help the brain, and the three neurotransmitters most influential in affecting your mood (and are also affected by your diet) are serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine. Enough of serotonin in the brain makes you feel optimistic, relaxed and focused, but too much can make you drowsy and apathetic, and too little will result in your feeling depressed, unable to concentrate and sleep, and give you cravings.
The other two - norepinephrine and dopamine - that you feel alert, energized and able if you have in good proportions. An excess of these neurotransmitters will create feelings of anxiety and stress, while not enough will cause depression and mental fatigue.
A little more science: the neurotransmitters in the brain assembles amino acids into the food (which is "protein" you and me), and there are two main factors that play an active role in the food "and mood" of connectivity, tryptophan (which is used to produce serotonin) and tyrosine (which is the main ingredient of dopamine and norepinephrine. Now we are ready to go to get serious!
If you're down on your luck, drawing blank and blank after feeling weak and depressed, you need to get tyrosine in your system! Eating foods rich in protein (lean meat, dairy, nuts, soy), and your brain will turn them into dopamine and norepinephrine, so you feel energized and more confident, just in the mood to take this break from it happens! No need to eat a whole steak - 3 or 4 ounces of protein should be sufficient. A glass of milk, yogurt or low fat cheese or a small chicken sandwich will do, and you return to the table in great shape.
If, on the other hand, you just took a bad beat or harassed by a big mouth and feel that you are about to lose your temper sweet and go wild on a slope, take a quick carb! Carbohydrates help you absorb the tryptophan, which be converted into serotonin. Within 30 minutes of eating a high carbohydrate (snack just a piece of toast in enough, your mind, not the whole loaf!) you will feel more relaxed, calmer and ready to throw your back while keeping your cool intact. Take some time off to eat a small bowl of cereal with sliced banana or a plate of pasta with tomato sauce, and the soothing effects for a period of several hours.
Other foods that affect your mood are:
- Chocolate: good, of course! Whenever you give chocolate to your other significant apologize for your mistake, you are very clever thing: chocolate contains phenylethylamine, also known as the "love drug" which releases endorphins - neurotransmitters dangerous that make you feel in love!
- Ice Cream: Bridget Jones had a good reason to Downing tanks Ben & Jerry's - sugar, fat and milk in ice cream are all inducers of good humor. But beware - the sugar will give you a corrective mood In short, after which comes a Downer. And Downer comes with a craving for sweets more ... and you know when this happens, do not you?
- Caffeine: coffee, tea or soda, we can not imagine life without it! A little caffeine will stimulate and make you more alert, but remember to keep to 3 cups per day and keep away from food.
- Selenium: not an inhabitant of the moon, but an important mineral in your diet, lack of selenium can make a person anxious, hostile and irritable. Unfortunately, by giving your mother-in-law of an overdose of selenium will not turn into a sweet darling, but getting enough of it will be permanently normalize abnormally cranky mood.
- Hydrogenated Fats: Fats are processed factory very bad for you. Eat them, and your brain will be forced to use them as basic elements - such as the use of toy parts to fix the engine of your car. "Trans fat, you will soon feel duller, slower and demotivated. By all means indulge if you really really want your fat treats, but avoid them like the plague if you have a great game!

Chocolate $9.8 New in paperback! 2006 IACP Award Winner: Literary Food Writing Category! A delectable journey into the world of chocolate--from manufacturing to marketing, French boutiques to American multinationals--by the award-winning author of Olives. Science, over recent years, has confirmed what chocolate lovers have always known: the stuff is actually good for you. It's the Valentine's Day drug of choice, has more antioxidants than red wine, and triggers the same brain responses as falling in love. Nothing, in the end, can stand up to chocolate as a basic fundament to human life. In this scintillating narrative, acclaimed foodie Mort Rosenblum delves into the complex world of chocolate. From the mole poblano--chile-laced chicken with chocolate--of ancient Mexico to the contemporary French chocolatiers who produce the palets d'or--bite-sized, gold-flecked bricks of dark chocolate--to the vast empires of Hershey, Godiva, and Valrhona, Rosenblum follows the chocolate trail the world over. He visits cacao plantations, meets with growers, buyers, makers, and tasters, and investigates the dark side of the chocolate trade as well as the enduring appeal of its product. Engaging, entertaining, and revealing, Chocolate: A Bittersweet Saga of Dark and Light is a fascinating foray into this food of the gods. |
