What alcohol brushing teeth with my cake?

I do my friend, a dark chocolate cake, most likely with frosting chocolate for her birthday. Since it's 21, I thought it would be fun to brush the layers of cake with alcohol. I know that rum is commonly used in such a way that would be an alcohol like Bacardi Gold work? Should I use a coffee liqueur instead? I'm just concerned about Kalhua thing as making it too sweet. Should I use Grand Marnier? What do you enjoy / work best? What is it like Amaretto di Saronno? It is almond liqueur, but I've never had. Is it too sweet?
